Non Geographic Numbers (NGNs) include 0800, 0808, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 0872, 0873.
0800 and 0808 are free to the caller, the number owner being charged for the call. These are attractive to those who believe their customers and potential customers will be more likely to call their business if the call is free.
0844 and 0845 are for businesses who want to appeal to customers in a broad geographical area and believe that the customer would be willing to pay for the call at a slightly higher rate than a normal number because of the serious nature of the call ie customer services or ordering.
0870 numbers were designed to be "National" numbers, charged at the BT standard rate for national calls. Since the actual cost of national calls has fallen, the difference has provided some revenue to the number owner. From 1 August 2009, that is no longer the case and 0870 numbers are charged at the normal national call rate. 0870 numbers are still available to anybody who wants one to show their seriousness in competing in the national market-place.
0871/2/3 numbers also signify a national presence and can generate revenue for the owner. This might be relevant for calls for advice, technical support etc where the call cost can contribute to the salary cost of the operator.
Virtual Number and Non Geographic numbers can be taken in packs as follows:
1 number: £10.00 per month rental
3 numbers: £15.00 per month rental
6 numbers: £30.00 per month rental
Connection Charge is £10.00 per number
